The Mood/Exercise Correlation

So up until this week, I’d been in a funk. Pretty much since Memorial Day. Chocolate wasn’t helping. Cuddling didn’t reverse it. Even the Xanadu soundtrack did nothing for me. It was baffling.

And then I went running. Did upper-body weight-lifting. And one of my favorite step aerobics DVDs. Then lower body weight work and abs.

I’ve pretty much worked out in some capacity every day this week, and you know what? It has done wonders for my spirits. It’s so easy to forget the far-reaching benefits of exercise. But when you’re reminded of them—man!—what a difference they can make. I feel stronger, not just in body, but in mind, humor, and chilled outedness. And just in time for summer, when I have to get into a bikini (which could really spin me into a sour spell!).

Speaking of bodies, Mr. Wonderful and I are going to Body Worlds 3 tonight at the Science Center in LA. I’m not a fan of blood, guts, or anything dead, but I’ve been intrigued by this exhibit for years. I’m glad to finally be able to see it. Mr. Wonderful suggested we get a drink beforehand to loosen us up in case it’s grosser than we expect. I’m hoping the plastination process just makes everything look kinda fake. And if worse comes to worst, I’ll just put on my sunglasses, close my eyes and let him lead me around like a blind person.

On another note related to my mood, a dear childhood and blogger friend sent me the best gift ever this week. I didn’t have a chance to take a picture of it because I got home too late last night, but it’s a fantastic little New Kids on the Block babydoll t-shirt (do people still say babydoll to describe shirts?). She also enclosed a very sweet note about reading my posts recently. Anita Stylist, thank you. You’re the best and if I could, I’d take that win away from the Celtics and give it to the Lakers and you!

Have a great weekend everyone!

There's nothing like running to lift your spirits. I always feel better after running even if just getting my running shoes on an hour earlier was an exercise in perseverance.

Let us know how the dead people look!

glad to hear your spritis are up! exercise will do that to you! speaking of which...if you want to bring your bike down on the 4th we always ride from our house to the harbor along hte beach...it's fun and usually good people watching along the way!! :)

Also, i'm with Dingo....let us know how the dead people look. I've been thinking about going to see that exhibit but i'm not usually into dead people...although Mr. W's idea of a cocktail beforehand is a good one.

Happy first day of summer...it's hot out there!

A doctor told me once that exercising can release some of the same brain chemicals that people who suffer from depression have too little of. So, the more you exercise, the better it's supposed to be for your head. I had hoped that when I was diagnosed with depression last year that the shrink would be me off work for a week to exercise, but no go...

Have fun. I've always wanted to go to one of those exhibits.

I'm exactly the opposite: exercise, no matter how much of it, does nothing for me or my mood. I'm a bit jealous of the people for whom it does. I think I wrote about it at some point...

I went to the last Body Worlds thing and, honestly, it didn't do much for me. The process was fascinating, as was the result, but something about the "dramatic" poses turned me off for some reason...

Awww...thanks for your nice note! You are very welcome for the muscle/cropped NKOTB shirt. Hopefully you're not basing my supposed style expertise based on it though. :)

You know...I definitely need to try to get back to working out regularly since I'm in dire need of some de-funking as well.

Excersize is good for your mood, this much I have learned. There's something about working up a sweat on the eliptical or running 5 miles on the treadmill that always make me feel better. Funk be gone! Glad you are feeling better :)
Oh and the NKOTB I'm sure your rocking that one out!

I always get in a funk without exercise. I'm a total endorphin addict. Gotta have it!

Bodyworlds is amazing! Can't wait to hear what you think of it! I am definitely not a blood and guts type of person either, but even though you know their real, they look fake and it is fascinating!

I read this on my phone but didn't get to comment yet... so, now you're expecting something profound I'm sure but all I really wanted to say is yay for running! And, I hear ya. Sometimes it's the only way to get out of a funk.

What did you think of the bodies? Tell me the side view of the layers of fat did not make you want to give up food for a while? I don't think I'll ever get that image out of my mind.

Dingo - Yeah those endorphins are addicting.

Laura - I'm riding with the sister-family, so I'm not sure if we'll have room for bikes, but if so, I'll def. bring mine.

Michael C - Depression is the reason I started running in the first place. That, and I needed to quell the urge to take a pick axe to my evil ex's skull after he cheated.

Geekhiker - Hiking is exercise, though. Doesn't that raise your spirits?

Anita - A run will almost always de-funk. Thank you again for being such an awesome NKOTB friend. :D

Semichrmd - I actually thought of you when I opened the tshirt!

Alysha - Yeah, I seem to forget how much NOT exercising can affect my mood.

JustRun - Yay is right! I'm going to post about the bodies in a bit...

Ah, I did the Body Worlds thing and it was interesting... kinda weird... I'm glad you found something to uplift your spirits! Mine is usually eating. Hee.
