Phrases Due for Retirement

Hi blog friends. I’ve been buried under heavy piles of work and way too many personal obligations lately. Sorry for not checking your posts much. I’m hoping to be reading and writing at more regular intervals very soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to throw out a quick post to shoot down some phrases I’ve been contemplating in my nil free time this week.

This all started when I overheard some dude at work say, “It’s all good” to someone on the phone. I immediately thought, “tardball.”

It seems to me that the following phrases just need to be suffocated and silenced forever. At least when it comes to middle-aged white guys. These sayings include:

“You go girl.”

“I’m just f&ckin' with ya.”

“What up, dawg?”

“What up, playah?”

“Get my drink on.”

“Get my [ANYTHING] on.”

High-fiving in public. (Note: I know this is not a phrase. Exceptions apply, including: sporting events, bar settings while sporting events are on TV, bar settings where a team game is being played.)

I know there are more, but instead of spending more time thinking of them, I’m just going to plan to punch someone in the mouth next time I hear him say one.

So long as you leave chest-bumping in public on your "still active" list, then I'm fine with your retirement list. =)

Also, I love how you automatically assume it's going to be a guy who sputters your next most hated phrase. ha.

totally agree with you on all of them...and i need to add one...."i'm just sayin"...ugh.... hate that one!

Oh this post is destined for greatness! :-) Just to throw one in quickly:
"You know what I'm sayin'?" or "You know what I mean?"

Argh!! It irritates the hell out of me when people say that (and these two phrases are always used when the asker doesn't care whether the listener knows!). I am always tempted to say "No, I don't know what you are sayin' and I don't give a damn!" One of these days I will. LOL

I DESPISE "It is what it is." Although, I have found myself saying it recently and I wanted to slap myself. :)

I feel like everyone is saying things are "-astic". Like they add that on the end of everything. I do this and it bugs me now that I see it on BILLBOARDS. Ugh. Just stab me in the eyeball.

I don't like when people say "gotcha". Random pet peeve!

@Laura: I was totally coming on here to add "I'm just sayin'"....!!! It is my number one most hated expression on the cyber planet! It's so passive-aggressive and insulting. Grr. Makes me feel rather violent whenever I read it.

Yeah!

You go girl!

(Oops. I think I need a 12-step program.)

@Sizzle I concur and would also like to have "izzle" added to that list.

And "oscity" or "licious".

Thank you all for adding to this - I forgot about some others that bug me.

I have to say (and I apologize if this offends Anonymous) but I hate with a passion: LOL. Seriously...every time I see it, I want to put white-out over my computer screen. I'd retire that one too. Thank goodness people don't say it out loud. (SIOL)

I agree with Mandy. I also loathe, "I just wanted to say..." and then the person says it. You wanted to say? Because from what I'm hearing, you're saying it.

I'm just saying.

I nominate "at the end of the day" for retirement. Hate it.

LOL - great list. Just kidding mel - please don't put whiteout on the screen. And i am guilty of saying "get my drink on". The kids at school say "deadass" which ron russo says occasionally and i hate it.

I just wanted to say: you go girl. This post is awesome-tastic, you know what I'm 'sayin? Next time I get my drink on, I'm gonna share it with all my friends. While chest-bumping and high-fiving them at the bar.

Hey, at the end of the day, is what it is.

LOL
