Could Care Less about the Dress

You guys, I think I want to wear sweats to my wedding. Bedazzled sweats, you know, to be fancy.

Amidst all the pre-planning research I did, never did I peruse dresses. Actually, that's not true. I may have flipped through a magazine or two at Barnes & Noble and all I could think was, wow these all look the same.

For a lot of women, the dress is THE THING. It makes the wedding. It's the piece of the puzzle they want to snap into place most. I know this because I watch TLC's Say Yes to the Dress just about every week. Tears are shed. Budgets are blown. Diets are declared. It's like the wedding is their one and only chance to be PERFECT.

Well, I hate to break it to Mr. Wonderful but I don't want to be perfect. I don't want to be a princess. I don't want to try on 231 dresses before finding "the one" that makes me spontaneously burst into tears. Only to get packed up in a box and shoved in a closet for 30 years or eternity.

I tried on about 8 dresses last week and none of them really stirred me. They were all lovely. Several of them fit well. And a couple made my friend and family members gasp, "That looks stunning."

Mostly, they just made me shrug and raise my eyebrows.

I'm not sure if I just don't know what I'm looking for, or if I really don't care. But this whole dress-finding task feels like So Much Work. I just want to check it off my list. Get it over with.

I already found the perfect groom. Do I really have to find the ideal dress?

All he is going to care about is how your wedding dress looks crumpled up on the floor next to the bed.

And *this* is why I adore you. I hated dress shopping. It just didn't feel like me and I wasn't over the moon about the experience, let alone any of the dresses. So, I spent 2 days shopping and picked a dress in that second day. I liked it. A lot. Loved it? Not really. But, I knew it'd fit with our vision for our wedding night and that's what matters.

Girlfriend, you'd look fabulous in sequence-covered sweats. And I'm pretty sure Mr. W would love you a little more because of it!

You know you could wear whatever the hell you want, right? I have dress fear cuz the dresses for larger girls are frumpy and ICKY. I have ideas of what I want and will likely have it made. It's not super wedding-ish but I don't give a rat's ass.

And yes, you will look lovely in anything you decide to wear!

You do look great in that one though. I agree with Wow on this one though!

The dress, the shoes, the wedding...that's not the important stuff...it's the marriage that is important. But you will be a beautiful bride, no matter what you wear!! :)

@Wow, that was awkward's second comment: Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

@You: But I still wanna see more pictures of you in wedding dresses. You can be like my own personal Say Yes to the Dress episode.

Hi Mel,
It's not the dress that makes
it perfect, you make the dress.
"Perfect is anything you wear"
Sincerely,
Richard

Keep life simple. Have the ceremony at a nudist resort. As bride and groom, you may be dressed, but everyone else has to be nekid. I guarantee whatever you wear, it'll be a hit.

have one made just the way you want. mine was knee length and pink. they're not as expensive as you'd think and then you can have just what you want. The traditional white dress is overated and EXPENSIVE anyway!

After the dress shopping fiasco, I REALLY wished I had gone down to FIDM or some design school and had a student make my dress. It would have been cheaper, original, and I would have gotten exactly what I wanted.

You are going to look great in whatever you choose. Besides, it's a myth that the guests want to see a great dress. It's all about the cake. You must have great cake.

shopping sucks. and all those dresses do look alike. if you can, narrow it down to a style you like and just focus on those. (this from the girl who bought her first wedding dress in the prom section of macy's and the second one is just something i picked up in bali last summer.)
