Different Dwellings

I LOVE home design and decor. It may not show when you enter my apartment...I still own a lot of leftover pieces from IKEA and I never painted my walls a different color because I never really thought I'd be in the same place for 8 years...but I drool over catalogs and get butterflies in my stomach at furniture stores. I daydream about picking pillow patterns and arranging knick knacks on shelves. This is part of why the thought of living with Mr. Wonderful is so alluring: because I'll get to start fresh!

Anyway, when Mr. W told me about the DWELL on Design Home Tour and Convention a few months ago, I was giddy at the thought of going. Saturday morning the tour day finally arrived, and we set out to explore 6 houses in the Venice Beach/Santa Monica area. What a treat it turned out to be! The gorgeous modern house above was my favorite on the tour.

But I think my other favorite may have been this little number below. We totally cracked up when we were walking toward one of the DWELL show houses and noticed this across the street. The picture does not do the gnome-age justice. The garden bric a brac was off the charts. And I found it funny and endearing that the owners were perched out front, watching all the hoity-toity yuppies walk to the fancy, minimalist home across the way.

Not all the homes were totally minimalist, as you can see below... When we came around the corner and found this room in one of the show houses, my eyes lit up and Mr. W said, "Oh my God you are NEVER having a room like this!" Everything was perfectly organized but I have never seen so much craftery in one space. It was seriously like someone took an entire Michael's Craft Superstore and condensed it into an 8' x 8' space.

I had sort of forgotten about both of these little hoarder's delights. But then Mr. W sent me an email with the subject line "Our house, inside and out" with the two pictures attached. Funny one, that Mr. W...

I think that craft room looks just like mine. I love it! And I am going to continue to pick up knick knacks for you to display on your shelves. I think Mr. W needs to take of tour of my "closed door" room.
I think I will sign up to be on the tour next year.

You know, my brother is a total slob. And his boyfriend is a total neat freak. And when they started co-habitating, the agreement was my brother would get one of the bedrooms to be his slob room, so long as the rest of the house stayed tidy and organized.

I think you should use that argument with Mr. W. Tell him that he can give you a tiny, jail cell space for your crafts, a space where you close the door, so he doesn't have to see ... or you can make sure to spread your projects across the dining room table and maybe even use the couch if you need extra space! =)

Awe, "our house". That is so exciting.

I love looking into people's homes to see how they decorate. Maybe that makes me creepy but I don't care. I follow a lot of decorating blogs and read magazines and watch shows and maybe I am overly curious but I love it!

I hope someday to have a craft/art studio in a converted garage or granny unit. A girl can dream!

Mom - Your craft room is far scarier and less organized than that one. We definitely need to keep Mr. W away from it if we ever want him to be an official family member.

Nilsa - That sounds like a fair deal! The funny thing is that I'm TOTALLY organized and Mr. W is a tornado. So really, I deserve the space more than he does...as far as I'm concerned... :P

Danielle - Too bad he was saying in the context of scary houses! :P

Sizzle - As we discussed offline, I'm creepy too. I don't think we should call it creepy...just "inquisitive." It's totally normal to be curious about other people's decorating...as you're peering in their windows in the middle of the night.

I have this bad habit of starting various crafts and then kind of letting them fall to the wayside. I wish I had more patience and stamina to stick with them.

That being said, I dream of such a craft room one day...
